Oscar and Baal

Christ All SufficientSometimes the obvious is so clear that its meaning is obscured. We live in a world that worships statues!

There is an irony in the attitudes of Hollywood and the entertainment media about the Bible, particularly the Old Testament. Bible morality is viewed with scorn and hatred. Both on the screen and in daily life, biblical purity is something to be mocked as a personality disorder.

Here is the irony.

Over 2,800 years ago, the Prophet Isaiah described the idol worshippers of his day with language that also perfectly describes the moral mess of Hollywood. People today also worship elaborate statues. Those in the film industry live and die for a statue, an idol called Oscar. The name on the statue could just as easily be Baal, or Molech instead of Oscar. Lives and moral virtue are sacrificed to earn Oscar’s favor. As in the worship of Baal, sex is part of the ritual. Infants not yet born are sacrificed to Oscar, just as babies were to Molech so that careers would prosper.

No, God and his morality has not been left behind. It is foolishness to live as though God’s word is an irrelevant fairy tale. Pray for those who worship Oscar and all of the little personal oscars that modern life entices us to follow. Only bowing to Christ will make sense of life. Listen to the voice of one calling in wilderness!

To whom can you compare God?
What image can you find to resemble him?

Can he be compared to an idol formed in a mold,
overlaid with gold, and decorated with silver chains?

Or if people are too poor for that,
they might at least choose wood that won’t decay
and a skilled craftsman
to carve an image that won’t fall down!
Isaiah 40:18-20
