Fear of the Lord

Airports, Ebola and God

Airports can be wonderful places.  They help make it possible to travel all over the world. But airports can also be places of danger. People, or more specifically, people with infectious diseases, can travel from one part of the world to another using airports. So what can be a great blessing can also be a great curse.    In the international airport in Dallas a flyer has brought the ebola virus to America. This morning the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says it is possible that several others could be infected as well. The CDC is also confident that this situation can be contained.   USA Today is reporting that the passenger in question arrived in Dallas from Liberia on […]

Teach your daughters to fear God, not men!

Relationships based on the fear of the Lord bring safety and security.  Men who fear God will honor, cherish and understand their wives. Women who fear God will be able to recognize men who do not fear the Lord. This awareness offers women protection from relationships that may lead to exploitation, insecurity and abuse. Your daughters must know this.    Weak men find their security in having women fear them. This is indeed ironic. These men put themselves in the place of God. They demand to be held in awe and reverence.    Exploitive, abusive men will often at first appear to be caring, even to a fault. But their motives are far from pure. As the relationship progresses the […]

Thought for the Lord’s Day

True worship must be rooted in humility.   Worship must be consumed with whom you worship. If your worship focuses upon your  experience then your experience becomes the object of worship.  This is not only a bad idea, it is an insult to God.    True worship must be rooted in humility. You and I are indeed people with unclean lips. Humility is a response to God’s greatness, power and holiness.   Worship is a response to greatness. When you consider who God is, you can not help but bow before him. If you are not blown away by the greatness of God, you are thinking too much of yourself.   Worship is a response to power. When you consider […]

ISIS – The Darker Side of Evil

Once again we have come face-to-face with the darker side of evil.     We face evil in some form everyday. We do live in a dark world. We know there is danger but we have become accustomed to the darkness. We use laws, social norms, military force, education, enlightened media pundits and brave first responders to make everyday evil seem less intimidating. We do this in the same way we use the light switch to make the night to less frightening.    Here are some examples of how we attempt to coexist with everyday evil.    Sexual immorality is evil. But rather than face this evil directly we use a different strategy.  We have made sexual immorality legal and […]

Wisdom & Your Emotions

The pursuit of wisdom must be a passionate pursuit.  I admit that passion and wisdom are not thoughts that are often put together. But this comparison is made with great force in Proverbs: Wisdom is more precious than rubies;     nothing you desire can compare with her. Proverbs 3:15   Additionally, acquiring wisdom means that wisdom is be loved:   Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;     love her, and she will watch over you. Proverbs 4:6   The love of wisdom is what will protect your heart. Notice the emotional connection with wisdom in these two Proverbs. Wisdom pursued with  heartfelt desire and deep love offers protection for your heart. This is how you guard your heart (Proverbs […]

God’s idea of freedom:

But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. 3 On the day when I act, you will tread upon the wicked as if they were dust under your feet,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.Malachi 4:2-3

70 years ago: a prayer to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization.

June 6, 1944 our President led the nation in prayer to God. The American people welcomed this prayer.  Notice FDR did not speak of many Gods or many faiths or many religions.  He asked that the will of Almighty God be done. Today, we seek protection from a moment of silence offered to a god of our own choosing. Today, we are too proud to seek protection of the one true God.    May God have mercy on our land.   Franklin Roosevelt’s D-Day Prayer June 6, 1944   My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing […]

This Easter, what do your children think of Jesus?

When you consider consider the sacrifice of your Savior, consider also your children. How have you represented God to you children? 3,500 years ago Moses failed to represent God as the holy, unique Lord of all creation. He made God look ordinary to the Israelites. As parents we must represent Christ for the holy One that he truly is.  He is God who has not treated us as our sins deserve. He is God who is loving and compassionate when we are not. He is God who gave his son so that we might live. He is Jesus who lived as we lived and suffered torment and agony beyond what we could ever imagine. He is Jesus who made us […]

Just heard from God

People often ask where is God. They want to see a sign that he exits. They question his power. The truth is that God shows himself and his power all the time. He demonstrates his power in awesome and terrible ways that tell us he is not to be trifled with.  Earlier this morning I heard once again the loud peals of thunder. Later, there was the sound of rushing wind. As I went outside on the front porch the wind was blowing sheets of rain parallel to the ground. The weather bureau said a tornado was passing just to the south. The wind was roaring. Then it began to swirl in different directions. And then everything was calm. The […]

Historical ignorance and the modern assault on Christianity

The Associated Press reports that officials at Shaw Air Force in South Carolina have removed a Nativity Scene from the base at the urging of the “Military Religious Freedom Foundation.” The foundation lodged a complaint about the display through the Air Force in Washington. Paul Loebe, spokesman for the foundation, said the Nativity scene was in violation of the Constitution. Ignorance of United States history is one of the great weapons used against Christianity. Here is  a quote from the official brochure of the Office of the Chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives: “On May 1, 1789, in one of its first acts, the House elected the Reverend William Linn, a Presbyterian minister from Philadelphia, as the official Chaplain […]
