America is in great peril

One Super Bowl ad shows why America is in great peril. God was used a marketing ploy. Even God’s cell phone can have a dead battery! This ad is from a company that sells charging accessories for electronic devices. The ad depicts a chaotic world that has suddenly gone out of control. At the end of the ad we see why: a character who is supposedly playing God has a cell phone whose battery is almost dead. The character sighs and the world continues to fall apart. God is truly irrelevant, at least in ad country. From these ads we learned that: lingerie makes for great sex, that an insurance company can keep our kids from dying, people can be […]

Refuge or Adversary

Parents, it is your choice. You can be your child’s adversary or you can be his refuge. Someone might be thinking, “Wait a minute, my teenager is the adversary, not me. And if he wants refuge, then he needs to start acting like he wants that!” As a father of five children, I hear you. But stay with me. Teenage life can be challenging. The impact of a Godless culture, education that is rooted in pragmatism, sexual immorality being peddled as tolerance and bodies morphing into young adults is a lot to face. Add to this the struggles of their own sins and the teenage years can be troubling ones. Parents, here is what must not be missed; the Christian […]

Love Is Not An Intention

Too often we cover our backsides with intentions. We intend to love, so we tend to ignore the impact of our actions. For example: “I am so sorry I got angry with you. It is just that I love you so much and I know that what you did will be bad for you. I just needed to get your attention right away.” Hint, your child is not buying this. A decision was made to replace love with anger. But, you may protest, that was not my intention! However, intentions are not safe guides unless they are informed by Scripture. This is why the Bible does not define love by a state of mind or by intent. Love is defined […]

Options For America In 2015

What hope does a country have that has no fear of God? The first option is to repent of her sins before the Lord of heaven and earth. There is no Plan B. Unrepentant sin leads to arrogance and self-importance. Ancient Nineveh was considered an important city. It was large and proud. And like today, obeying God was an outdated joke. The city was evil. Jonah’s message was simple, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown.” When the King of Nineveh was confronted by God’s prophet, he did something extraordinary – he repented! He rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. Then he issued a proclamation: By the […]

One more gift to open

You have one more gift to open. The day after Christmas does not mark the end of gift giving. Each morning the gift of Christ awaits. Even more, this gift is one that God opens for you. God is relentless in his pursuit to bring joy to your needy soul. He cannot be out given. No matter what circumstance you face, the unfailing love of God is constant. This love transcends the difficulties of this temporal life. Each morning the wonder of Christmas is yours again. This is not a gift that you have earned. Therefore, don’t require others to earn your love and your favor. Give this gift that is freely given to you to your spouse, to your […]

Thought for the Lord’s Day

No Gospel, No Peace There is a common misunderstanding about the blessing of peace given by the angels at the birth of Christ. The blessing is not for all on earth, but for those with whom God is pleased. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:14 These 17 words tell us much about the meaning of Christmas and why there can be no real peace without the rule of Christ in the hearts of men. For thousands of years since that dark day in the garden, war ruled in the human heart. The only hope of peace is changed hearts in the race of men. This was the […]

Mary, An Ordinary Girl

Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, unexpectedly came face-to-face with the angel Gabriel. Mary was a young woman, quite possibly a teen-ager. To say that she was startled and taken aback would be a huge understatement. But Gabriel comforts her and then with a few spoken words turned her life upside down. She was going to become a mother. She was told her child would grow up to take the throne of King David and that his kingdom would have no end. This was not an ordinary conversation. Gabriel was no ordinary visitor. Her baby would not be an ordinary son. Mary, an ordinary young woman, a sinner saved by grace, was troubled and confused and afraid as any woman […]

Thought for the Lord’s Day

Clear the way for the Lord. The Lord has come and he will come again. Christmas marks the beginning of the end. The end of: Greed, Selfishness, Bigotry, Racism, Oppression, Immorality, Secularism, Corrupt leaders, Abuse, Anger, Hatred, Suffering, Heartbreak. Someone is saying, “Wait a minute! Haven’t you seen the news.” Yes, I have. But there is news that is better than what is on the cable, network or internet. It was announced in the heavens 2,000 years ago. The items on this list have been defeated by Jesus Christ. The good news is that the Lord will make his way through the spiritual wasteland of our planet. He makes a certain promise that one day there will be no more […]

Humility and Awe

Humility and power are seldom connected. Humility is associated with peace, passivity and keeping a low profile. A humble person is not considered a person to be feared. When your kids are out of control, humility is probably not the first thing you pray for. In our culture humility does not inspire awe. All of these thoughts about humility might be widely held. But they all are wrong. The most courageous, loved, feared and hated man ever to walk the face of the earth described himself as humble. This man began his life on earth in a stable because there was no room for him anywhere else. But while his birth was ignored by people the heavens above erupted with […]

Merry Christmas and the Gospel

The first widespread usage of the greeting “Merry Christmas” apparently began in 1843 with the publishing of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Not surprisingly, the greeting first appeared on Christmas cards that same year. The idea behind this phrase is that Christmas should be a happy, joyous time. When you wish someone a Merry Christmas, you are, in fact, offering a blessing to them. The blessing of forgiveness of sin. God filled the sky with his angels to honor the birth of his son. God commands the rivers and the hills to sing for joy at the Savior’s birth. So giving the blessing of Merry Christmas resonates with the purpose and actions of God! Psalm 98 was the basis of […]
