From Monologues to Questions

In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?" tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Deuteronomy 6:20-21 A fool finds no pleasure in understanding     but delights in airing his own opinions. Proverbs 18:2 How do you measure your effectiveness at listening to your children? Besides the self-conscious concern to implement Proverbs 18:15, there is one tangible way to confirm that you are on the right track. You can gauge the effectiveness of your listening by the questions your children ask you. That’s right—good listening on your part will […]

Monologues and Teenagers – Part 2

In this series of posts we are looking at the communication breakdowns that often occur between parents and teenagers. What once appeared to be a good relationship with lots of interaction can deteriorate to silent, disinterested teens enduring parental monologues. After such an encounter, more than one parent has turned away, asking with an aching heart, why is this happening? In the last post we looked at the command in Proverbs 18:15 to be aggressive listeners. This listening is not just for current exchanges, but includes remembering the conversations of the past. When did the conversations start to drift towards the monologues that typify current communication with your teenagers? Try to remember events from your child’s perspective. It is important […]

Monologues and Teenagers

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge;      the ears of the wise seek it out. Proverbs 18:15 One of our readers left the following as part of a comment to the post, How Sin Works – Application to Teenagers:“It is hard to dialogue and not monologue with a 13 year old who doesn’t respond. Any suggestion?” This mom is not alone. Parents are frustrated by contrasts. Contrasts, such as when you observe your teenager talking a mile-a-minute with friends and yet, when you talk with him, his exuberance collapses into strained monosyllables.     Did you have a good day? Sort of.    How was your test? Okay.    Do you have homework? Maybe.    Do you have plans this weekend? Not sure.    […]

How Sin Works – Application to Teenagers

So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22 Sin’s deceitfulness targets teenagers particularly. As Timothy warns, youthful passions must be avoided and righteousness pursued with great energy. We have already addressed the youthful scheming of Jonadab and Amnon. Amnon’s desires made him an easy target. He craved his sister, Tamar, and was willing to take whatever shortcuts and schemes seemed viable in order to satisfy his sensual passions. His headlong pursuit of immediate gratification had a fatal outcome. That is where living for the moment can lead. In the 21st century, the entertainment media and advertising industry have assumed the role of […]

Protected From the Heart

How can a young man keep his way pure?   By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart;   do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart   that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9-11 Our children need to be protected by God’s word when they sleep. We know this, at least in part, because Scripture promises it will offer protection while one is sleeping. By implication, those who do not seek the protection the Scriptures offer are vulnerable to spiritual attack during sleep. The question at the end of the last post was How do children acquire this protection? The verses above, from Psalm […]

Protected Sleep

When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. Proverbs 6:22 On average we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping. Sleep refreshes our bodies. A good friend of mine, a pediatrician, tells me that when we sleep our metabolism slows down so the maintenance functions of the body can be accomplished. Cell and tissue repair occur during this down time, rather than when the body is active and needing energy to do other things. Sleep is an amazing component of God’s creation of man. It is a daily reminder of our finiteness as creatures. God, our Creator, has no need of sleep and thus is able […]

Communicating the Gospel, God’s Goodness to your Teenagers

The wise in heart are called discerning,   and pleasant words promote instruction. Proverbs 16:21 If the wisdom of God has entered your heart then you can say that God has been good to you. This pleasantness of heart should result in pleasant words from your mouth. What do I mean by pleasant words? I’m not talking about careful, manipulative words that play polite “control” games with others. No, pleasant words should illustrate the genuine joy and pleasure that results from experiencing the power of the Gospel in your life. You and I deserve the torment of hell, but through gospel grace we receive the wonderful mercy of God. This reality must be translated into the language that you speak […]

Raising Davids

Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? I Samuel 17:26 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." I Samuel 17:36-37 It is possible that after these last few posts some of you may be thinking that I have a problem with the news media. Actually, my purpose is to encourage families to recognize God for who he is and raise their children accordingly. […]

David, Josiah and Mary

20 My son, keep your father’s commands        and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 21 Bind them upon your heart forever;        fasten them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they will guide you;        when you sleep, they will watch over you;        when you awake, they will speak to you. 23 For these commands are a lamp,        this teaching is a light,        and the corrections of discipline        are the way to life, 24 keeping you from the immoral woman,        from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. As we finish this series of posts on Proverbs […]

Do Hard Things

22 When you walk, they will guide you;        when you sleep, they will watch over you;        when you awake, they will speak to you. 23 For these commands are a lamp,        this teaching is a light,        and the corrections of discipline        are the way to life… Proverbs 6:22&23 These verses envision a dynamic relationship between the word of God and young people. God’s truth should resonate in the lives of teenagers. The word is living and active. One example of what this could look like in today’s youth is displayed in the lives of Alex and Brett Harris. They are the authors of the website […]
