Fifty Shades of Sin

The book of 1 John, particularly chapter 2, makes a strong plea for Christians not to love the world or anything in the world.  These are strong words. The word world used in this context is not referring to the physical creation, but to the world system, led by Satan, that is diametrically opposed to the kingdom and rule of God. This world is by nature deceptive, often masquerading as a place of light and happiness.  The basic plan of this world system is to make the things of Satan appear to be something different than what they really are.  This is why John argues passionately against loving the world. This is the same world that Paul describes in Ephesians 2:1-3 that is under the dominion of the prince of the kingdom of the power of the air.

John’s passion against loving the world is because he knows that there is no in between, no middle kingdom.  There is the either the dominion of the dark prince or the Kingdom of the living God and his Son.

Just as Satan successfully tempted Eve by calling into question God’s commands the world today constantly attacks the validity of God’s direction for mankind. In 2012, the greatest threat to your family is not the Mayan Calendar or global warming. It is Satan and the forces of darkness portraying God’s loving directives as out of touch and unenlightened.

To find evidence of this you need look no further than the best seller lists at a place like Amazon. Amazon sells books and lots of them. The list has been dominated in the last few months by a trilogy of books written by E.L. James. These books have held the number 1, 2, & 3 in sales rank for at least the last 2 months. The books occupy the top 3 rankings in Amazon’s United Kingdom market as well. The first book is called Fifty Shades of Grey. The plot line is simple.  A nice young girl becomes romantically involved with a man, Christian Grey, who leads her into his dark world of sexual perversion.  The title of the book illustrates my point. God says that there is one place that is appropriate for sexual activity. The Bible says this place is marriage. The world system controlled by Satan says that sex in whatever form desired is okay with any number of adults.  This would be labeled by some as being too white and black.  The more “enlightened” of our day would say there is a broad area of gray activities that are possible; even fifty shades of “gray”.

This is the gray world that your children are and will be inhabiting. Heed John’s warning: do not love the world!  What masquerades as gray, or grey, has no light at all.  It is only darkness.  Despite the huge popularity and acceptance of these books and others like them, they are still distortions of the truth.  As Proverbs 7 teaches, this grey world is a trap, an enticing lure to the bedrooms of death.
