NASA says that there are at least 2 or 3 eclipses of the sun every year and 2 total eclipses every 3 years. But this one is huge because so many people will be in the path of totality as it crosses the United States.
What are you to make of this cosmic display? Beyond the unique setting and the wonder of the eclipse, the most important story that this eclipse tells is God’s story. God asks Job a question that at once reveals Job’s limitations and God’s infinite power:
Where does light come from,
and where does darkness go?
Can you take each to its home?
Do you know how to get there? (Job 38:19-20)
This is a profound distinction between Creator and creature. The light and the dark come from God’s direction for his pleasure. The dramatic change from light to dark to light that occurs this day happens at the direction of God to bring honor to his name. Amidst all of the awe of the scientific observations this one great truth must not be missed!
Today, for those of us in path of eclipse, the voice of the heavens giving honor to God is being displayed in spectacular fashion. The Sun, the Moon, the planets and stars all move just as God precisely commands. (Psalm 19:1-6) If this eclipse does not bring a mixture of awe, humility, even of repentance you will miss the message God has for you. This eclipse is not primarily for your enjoyment. This cosmic display is a vivid reminder of how dependent we are on the care and plan of God.
Suppose with me, just for a moment, that God chose to stop the movement of the moon at the time of totality where you are. It is presumptuous to assume that God is obligated to keep the moon’s path going forward. It will go forward and bring light again to the darkness because this serves the plan and purpose of God. Yes, you and I are that dependent upon the second-by-second care of God for his universe.
Be in awe of the special opportunity to see the wonder of the eclipse. Be more in awe of the God who sustains your life and mine for the sole reason that his name is to be praised because he alone is holy and worthy to be worshiped.
