Is Life Random?

Last night Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock made headlines when asked about his views on exceptions that would allow for an abortion. Here is what he said according to an article in USA Today:

Asked whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest, Mourdock said, “I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

This post should not be taken as an endorsement for Mourdock or for either presidential candidate. What I want to focus on is this question: are there limits to God’s sovereignty? Mourdock’s comment has been criticized by members of both political  parties. USA Today has made the story its lead story on its online site. The quote is being judged in the court of public opinion. There is no consideration, at least in the national media, that there is another way to know what is right other than sampling public opinion. The idea that God and morality can be thought of apart from public opinion is terrifying to the modern media and culture.

The moment we move away from seeing God as the one in control of all things our view of the world is radically altered. We must abandon the comfort of knowing that God is so powerful that he can work all things together for the good of his people. Christ will no longer be the King of Kings. He will only be the king of what we allow him to be. Ultimately, if God is not sovereign, then life itself becomes random.

Only a steadfast belief in the authority of Scripture can offer an alternative to being subject to the whims of public opinion. If we allow life to be thought of as random, we embrace the culture of evolution and it’s resulting chaos. It is not just Richard Mourdock who is being ridiculed in the press. The Living God of the Bible is also being mocked and scorned.

The events of life are not random. The events of life all work together to bring honor and  glory to our great God and King.
