Earlier this morning I heard once again the loud peals of thunder. Later, there was the sound of rushing wind. As I went outside on the front porch the wind was blowing sheets of rain parallel to the ground. The weather bureau said a tornado was passing just to the south. The wind was roaring. Then it began to swirl in different directions. And then everything was calm. The rain became soft and gentle. The squall line had passed. The voice of God is tender and mighty.
When the sound of thunder begins as a distant echo and builds in intensity to crashing, violent explosions of sound, it is a good thing to pray for God’s protection. But it is also good to remember that God’s primary purpose is not to protect you or me. His primary purpose is to bring glory to his name. If Jesus Christ, the Lord of the wind and the waves, had taken my home or the life of me or my son this morning, he would have honored his name just as much as he did by granting life for another day.
Our days, our lives are in God’s hands. He tells us that all the time – if we would only listen.
God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.
He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’
So that everyone he has made may know his work,
he stops all people from their labor.
The animals take cover;
they remain in their dens.
The tempest comes out from its chamber,
the cold from the driving winds.
The breath of God produces ice,
and the broad waters become frozen.
He loads the clouds with moisture;
he scatters his lightning through them.
At his direction they swirl around over the face of the whole earth
to do whatever he commands them.
He brings the clouds to punish people,
or to water his earth and show his love.
Job 37:5-13

Thank you for this beautiful reminder of who God is and why we should hold Him up above all else. We serve an awesome God and we should never forget to acknowledge Him in all things. Beautiful!
