Man shall not live by bread alone…

In Scripture we are taught that:

Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4

Thus, when God’s instruction is ignored, we can expect life not to go well. Sometimes, it takes a while for this truth to be fully grasped. One of the themes of the sexual revolution of the 1960’s is the belief that marriage is an outdated institution and certainly is not the only place for sexual activity. Fifty years later, we have arrived at the point where marriage and sex have no cultural relationship to each other. Sexual expression, in almost any form, has become the right of any person, adult or child. The choice was made not to live by God’s word.

Our culture’s view of God and his word has become so negative we now believe that God has nothing to do with a person’s gender. Culturally speaking, now individuals, not God, determine whether a person is a male or a female or both!

Where will it end? I have no idea. What I do know is that if God’s truth continues to be despised and ignored in the areas sexuality and marriage it will not end well for the culture and those caught up in the practices which defy God. The offer is sexual freedom has turned into a tangled web of sadness, confusion and slavery.

The only alternative is acceptance of the gospel leading to repentant people. Only the church can make this kind offer to a country and culture that has lost its way. We must be ready as a church to offer a compassionate alternative to the path our culture has taken. People have lost their way and repentance is their only hope. May God fill us mercy and truth for this great task ahead.
