Nowhere to hide

It is easy to worship like we live. We become used to hiding from others what we are truly like. We smile with our lips but scorn with our hearts. We praise with our words, but doubt with our thoughts. We offer good will to all but harbor injustice in our spirit. Because we interact with flawed, imperfect humans we actually believe our charades are believable.

But interacting with God is a totally different picture. God is completely perfect with no flaws. What works with people doesn’t work with God. Here is the clear reality that David embraced when he considered the person of God. Listen to David’s thoughts:

I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—

but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
Psalm 139:11-12

David knew that all that he was, even the dark parts that he hid from himself were on display before God. There are no dark places that escape God’s notice. What we seek to hide from God is already known to him. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

The truth is that we live like we worship. If your worship is not genuine, neither will your life be genuine. There is nowhere to hide your secret, wayward thoughts from God. Rejoice that God knows all that there is to know about you. Rejoice that in Christ this means you can know peace rather than fear.

Rejoice that you cannot hide from God!
