Truthfulness

Truthfulness is telling information accurately, without exaggerating or misleading. A prayer to teach your children, and yourself, about truthfulness: Lord, help me to be truthful. Sometimes, I am afraid if I tell the truth I’ll get in trouble or someone will be angry with me. Thank you that Jesus died to pay for all the sins of his people. Please give me the courage to please you be being truthful. In Jesus’ name, Amen. This definition and prayer are taken from Get Wisdom!. Though the book is written to instruct young children about biblical wisdom, it reminds us that the things we teach our children are the same things that God wants us to learn and practice.  We struggle with […]

The Meek War Horse

In biblical times horses who were being trained for war had to have an essential quality before they could be used in combat. The great power of a war horse needed to be submissive to the authority of its rider.  This quality of power under authority was called meekness. Being meek is not weak!  Thus, Get Wisdom! defines meekness this way: Meekness is being willing to give up my rights in order to put others first. Meekness waits for God to bring about justice.

Summer Is Coming

After Memorial Day, summer inevitably arrives. From the rising thermometer to the seemingly endless end-of-school-year events, the heat is on. Schedules that have controlled the last nine months are now in flux. Perhaps the annual vacation is just around the corner and a thousand things still need to be done. Or perhaps the rising gas prices have forced some changes in the vacation schedule.  The grass is growing once again.  The mower is acting up once again. All of this and more makes summer a time that is both longed for and dreaded. Sometimes it seems the one constant theme of summer is problems and more problems.

Wisdom, the Gospel, and Your Children

No child is born wise. Wisdom is a skill that must be acquired. If you are waiting for your child to grow up and begin to make wise choices, you will be waiting a long time. Ruth Younts says that Christian “wisdom is knowing and understanding the truth, obeying the truth, and making wise decisions based on the truth.” This is why Proverbs is adamant that we must get wisdom. Imparting God’s wisdom is far more than information transfer. Providing God’s wisdom to your children begins with the gospel. Apart from embracing the gospel, no one will even desire to be biblically wise. Wisdom is living a life that is oriented toward God, toward honoring God in each decision that […]

Almost Always…

The fear of the LORD leads to life:   Then one rests content, untouched by trouble.  —Proverbs 19:23 The fool says in his heart,        "There is no God."  —Psalm 14:1 Note: a number of blogs and web sites have commented on this study.  It is important for parents to understand the movement of our culture towards a relativistic view of sin. USA Today, on March 19th, reported on the state of sin in  America. In an article titled “Has the notion of sin been lost?” the Nations’ Newspaper explores what people think about sin. The article highlights a study done by Ellison Research about sin. For purposes of the study, sin is defined as “something that is almost […]
