Oscar Pistorious and Reeva Steenkamp appeared to have it all. Mr. Pistorious was lauded as a remarkable story of courage and the will to overcome adversity. He was the “Bladerunner.” Despite being a double amputee he was able to compete in the 2012 Olympic games in the men’s 400 meters. He finished last in his semi-final heat, but he received universal acclaim as an athlete and role model.
Also last summer, fellow South African, Reeva Steenkamp, was competing in a reality TV show. Ms. Steenkamp, was a model, lawyer, and social advocate. She too was well-respected. At the close of the reality series she had this to say:
“I think the way that you go out, not just your journey in life, but the way that you go out and the way you make your exit is so important,” Steenkamp says in the video. “You either made an impact in a positive or a negative way, but just maintain integrity and maintain class and just remain true to yourself.” These were her comments about being on the show.
These are the words and deeds of human optimism. This is the promise that the world controlled by Satan offers. It is a promise made to broken.
Then, this fall Ms. Steenkamp and Mr. Pistorious met and began dating. They were two people on their way up, overcoming the odds as they went. They were a couple. No one in the media seemed to care whether or not they were married. That question has become outdated and politically incorrect.
Early Valentine’s Day morning it is alleged that Mr. Pistorious shot Ms. Steenkamp four times in his upscale home in a gated community near Pretoria. A tragic ending to another broken promise. The world simply cannot make good on what it promises.
Failing to acknowledge and worship God is dangerous and a frightful thing to do. The politically correct culture mocks this truth. But it is nonetheless reality. Don’t miss these opportunities to tell your children about the foolishness of man and the wisdom of God. Do so with compassion and gentleness. Do so with the love of your Savior. But do it ,you must. Don’t allow the empty promise of this world to betray the trust of your children.
