RW Glenn – The Kingdom of Heaven

What exactly does Jesus mean by the word kingdom? Most basically, the term kingdom refers to something dynamic, not something static like a geographic or political or spatial realm; instead, the kingdom is the regime, rule, or reign of God. It is God’s powerful reign as king of the cosmos, being exercised right now over absolutely everything. As I write these words, the Lord is micromanaging every last detail of the universe, down to its tiniest particle: “The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all” (Psalm 103:19).

Here, however, Jesus means a more specific subset of God’s sovereign rule over everything. 7 This kingdom fulfills a promise that God made his people concerning a day when he would save them from all their enemies and exercise his power such that everything that had gone wrong with the universe because of our rebellion in the garden of Eden would be set straight. In Isaiah 11:1–7, God describes his kingdom as a place that enjoys complete wisdom, understanding, strength, fear of the Lord, justice, righteousness, faithfulness, and peace. Indeed, in the kingdom of heaven, every aspect of salvation is fully realized.
