The Passionate Pursuit of God

A Proverbs Driven LifeIs God distant, maybe not as close as you would like? Is he an idea, a fleeting abstraction that when you use his name it sounds hollow? When you talk to your kids about goodness of God, do they either literally or figuratively roll their eyes? Is the idea of showing Christ to those you an illusive dream?

So how do we clear the vision? How can we make God vibrant in our own eyes — so vibrant that our kids know we are genuinely compelled by our love for him?

Solomon helps bring things into sharper focus. He says to find intimate knowledge of God, you must be passionately committed to seeking him, you must be all in. In Chapter 2:1-5 of Proverbs the Holy Spirit likens seeking God with a search for hidden treasure. His idea is profound for its simplicity. You wont’t find the treasure unless you are committed to searching for it!

Suppose I told you that you could find millions of dollars in your back yard, all you have to do is go find it. Would your response be passive? Would you start your search after you have had a nap or watched your favorite TV program? Would you worry about the neighbors thinking you are weird because you are digging up your yard? Would you sit in your house and complain that you don’t have time to search or that you don’t want to get your clothes dirty? These objections sound rather silly, don’t they. We are talking about MILLIONS of dollars! If you believed the money was there you would not be deterred by any of these things. You would be consumed with your search.

Scripture tells you and me that the truths of God are worth more than any amount of silver or gold. Solomon says the you must pursue finding the wisdom of God with the same passion with which you would look for hidden treasure. Note this comparison. In Proverbs Chapter 1 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools what no part of this pursuit. In Chapter 2 Solomon declares that the fear of the Lord is found by an all out pursuit of the truth.

In other words, fools have no intention to passionately pursue God’s truth.

Don’t make the mistake of following fools! Pursue the knowledge of God with the passion Proverbs and the Holy Spirit demands.
