Thought for the Lord’s Day

But there is a God in Heaven!

King Nebuchadnezzar had had enough of the mystical song and dance routine his spiritual advisors had been playing before him.  The King had a disturbing dream. He wanted to know the meaning of this dream. He also doubted the authenticity of his advisors. So he devised a test to find out if his advisors could be trusted. Not only would they have to interpret the dream, they would also have to tell the King what the actual dream was.  If they failed to do this, Nebuchadnezzar would have them all killed.

The whole collection of Babylonian advisors panicked and were in great distress.  The King had called their bluff. Because Daniel was numbered among this large group of advisors, he too was threatened with death. He sought God for the answer he needed to live. And God answered!

Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
    wisdom and power are his.

He changes times and seasons;
    he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
    and knowledge to the discerning.”  Daniel 2:20-21

Daniel then went to Nebuchadnezzar to reveal to him both the dream and its meaning. The King asked Daniel:

“Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”

Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.” Daniel 2:26-28

This God in heaven is the God you worship this Lord’s Day. Praise his great name for who he is and that your life is in his hands!
