Thought for the Lord’s Day

How big is your God?

When you go to church you will sing songs that exalt the wonder and power of God.  Do you really believe that God is an amazing God? I am confident that the vast majority of you reading this post would answer an emphatic yes. But let me take this just one additional step. If you really believe that God is the wonderful, magnificent person described in the songs you sing and in the Bible you read, could you easily forget him?

Again, you say, of course I won’t forget God and his power.

In response, I am rebuked by how often I fail to acknowledge the powerful God I praise on Sunday. James helps me regain my focus. He reminds me of my foolish thoughts, the thoughts that ignore that nothing will happen apart from the will of the Great God of Heaven.

13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. James 4:13-16
