When God Doesn’t Do What You Want

When it comes to life, you and I are often poor script writers. And that is a good thing! Okay, how can I say that this is a good thing?

Most of the disappointments that you face in life come because things did not work out as you had planned. This does not mean that what you had planned was necessarily bad or wrong. And this where the difficulty comes. You wanted and prayed for something you thought was good. Perhaps you prayed for the health of someone you love or asked for a relationship to be restored. Maybe there was a gift you wanted to give that you could not. What about the day off you planned to spend with your family at the park and the sky opened up with torrential rainfall? We don’t mind so much when a bad idea doesn’t work out, but why do the good plans we have often fall apart?

The Holy Spirit answers this question with this truth:

The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance;
therefore, I will hope in him!”

You and I know far too little to think that we are capable to plan what is best for us and the people around us. No matter how much I think I know what is best, the track record of my life indicates it is foolish to think that I will always or even frequently make the best choice. But this is where the words of Lamentations bring hope!

You and I do not need circumstances to know whether or not God is faithful and is always acting in love. These words of Scripture were not written to confirm that my plans and life-scripts were good. They were written to encourage me that the mercies and love of God is unending and faithful even when he chooses not to do what I want. You and I still must plan and pray to do what is good and make wise choices. But we do so knowing that no matter what happens God is faithful to do what is best.

So each morning his mercies are new and good. This is not because what is to happen that day will conform to my script. It is good because what happens each day, even the hard things, are part of the loving faithfulness of my God.
