Whew, it is not assault, it is only lust – no problem!

You may have read that the quarterback for the number one ranked college football team and a leading candidate for the famed Heisman Trophy was a person of interest in a possible sexual assault case. The Florida State Attorney’s office had to determine if there was a reason to bring charges of sexual assault against the quarterback. The female in the case claimed assault. The young man said that there was sexual activity but that it was consensual. On Thursday, December, 5, the States Attorney determined that there was not enough evidence to bring charges against the quarterback, so the case was dropped. So the hunt for the National Championship is still on and the Heisman Trophy is within reach. Both of these goals would have likely vanished if the young man had been charged.

Why is this news story important for you and your family? Because it demonstrates that God and his word are held in low regard by our culture and by our colleges and universities. We may never know for sure whether the assault occurred or not. What we do know is that the quarterback freely allows that casual, consensual sex did take place. Yet, because he was not charged with assault all is well.

In our schools and colleges, casual, consensual sex is not an indication of character issues or moral failure. This is considered to be just a normal part of campus life. Also, apparently the folks who govern the Heisman Trophy don’t think that casual, consensual sex detracts at all from the status of the trophy winner. Note this statement regarding what the Trophy symbolizes which can be found on the Heisman website:

“Our goal through these charitable endeavors is for the Heisman Trophy to symbolize the fostering of a sense of community responsibility and service to our youth, especially those disadvantaged or afflicted.”

So the trophy symbolizes “a sense of community responsibility.” It would seem then, that casual consensual sex falls within the guidelines of community responsibility.

The Bible has a differing view. Sex outside of marriage is damaging to both of the people involved. It brings shame and damage to the community and most importantly it is an affront to the Living God. However, to say this would be seen as an attempt to impose biblical values on people who don’t believe the Bible and that would be an even greater wrong.

I am not calling for a new law that condemns sex outside of marriage. I am saying that law already exists and it is enforced by the Ruler of the Universe. It is a fearsome and awful thing to flaunt God and his commands. Pray with me that the church would love God enough that we would influence our culture and country, not through laws, but through our lives.

I specifically did not mention the University or the name of the young man because the problem is not unique to the particular school or to this one young man. It has become the unwritten law of our schools, our universities and of our land. May God have mercy upon us.
