Wisdom for Parents

Contentment is knowing that God has arranged all the events of my life so that at this moment I can live for his glory and experience his goodness. Contentment means I can do everything God wants me to do. I can know God’s peace regardless of my circumstance.

Paul talks about contentment this way:

“…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11b-13.

Here are some promises you can make to God to demonstrate your commitment to contentment:

As a parent, I will be careful not to complain when finances are tight because I know secret of contentment. I know that if my trust in God is sincere I can be a good example to my family.

I will be thankful for God’s good care for me even if I was passed over for a promotion at work.

I will be confident that the power of Christ will give me the strength I need to lead my family even when I am sick or have suffered disappointment.

What are the areas of your life where you are discontent? As you think about these areas are you frustrated with God’s provision for your life? Are you dominated by regret or sorrow? Are you troubled by your own weakness. Are you discouraged by insults or persecution? If you are, Paul has some encouraging words for you!

2 Corinthians 12:10: “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Being content is God’s way forward for you.

Prayer for contentment.

Father, you give me everything I need and you have given me what I need – forgiveness for my sin. I need your strength to be content. Sometime I struggle with being angry and self-pity. I confess that I often substitute what I want for what you want. Please help me to be satisfied with your love and to rest in your perfect care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
