Repost: The Manipulation Game

Jesus delivers a subtle warning in the Sermon on the Mount about the danger of manipulation. Look at Luke 6:32-33: “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.  And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that…” If you do good to get something good you are involved in manipulation. So, if your parental discipline is primarily designed to make things at home go more smoothly, you are doing good to get good. The rich young man in Matthew 19 had outwardly kept the commandments because he saw the value of being good. Most likely, […]

Repost: Flee and Pursue

Indulging sensual desires has become an entitlement for young people.  The message is loud and persistent: You can have it. You can have it now. You deserve it. Advertising that targets our nation’s youth is built on these three components of youthful desires or lusts. A cultural shift has occurred. It is one that is based on gratifying youthful desire. Having sex outside of marriage is the new social normal. Virginity is an indication of a dysfunctional personality.  The notion of drinking responsibly doesn’t mean restraint, it means finding a designated driver. Surprised by War!

On a beautiful Sunday morning there were signs. There were ongoing negotiations, there were secret plans and a grand scheme. There was deception. There was a belief things could be managed, that our country would be safe. Then the sky was filled with planes and bombs. Thousands died at Pearl Harbor that Sunday. Hundreds of thousands more would die in the days that followed. There was also one missing component in the policy making of our country on that Sunday morning, December 7,1941. Like today, there was a refusal to believe what the Bible said about the human heart in Jeremiah 17:9: The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad […]

New DVD Series: When Sinners Say “I Do”

Shepherd Press is pleased to announce the When Sinners Say “I Do” video series. Pre-order now to receive $40 off the regular retail price of $59.95. We expect the DVDs to begin shipping in mid-December. Marriage is the union of two people who arrive at the altar toting some surprisingly large luggage. Often it gets opened right there on the honeymoon, sometimes it waits for the week after. The Bible calls it sin and understanding its influence can make all the difference for a man and a woman who are building a life together. In this eight-session video series, Dave engages his audience with humor and honesty as he speaks about sin and the power of the gospel to overcome […]
