Another Side of Tebow

I’ve done a couple of posts about Tim Tebow. This time I am going to link to the Red Like Blood blog for a post about Tim.   When you go to the blog, take a minute to check out the site. Bob Bevington and Joe Coffey have put together a great collection of posts which speak of the amazing grace of God. So when you click on the link below you will find an encouraging story about Tim and another great resource about the relentless grace of God! Link to post about Tebow:

Post Only What is Helpful

The apostle Paul does not make a suggestion for the specific type of communication that you employ in Ephesians 4:29. Rather, under the inspiration and authority of the Holy Spirit, he issues a direct and strong command. It is one that all of us too often ignore. Structuring our words to bring grace to our listeners is frequently the last thing on our minds. However, by failing to do so, our words become corrupt, unwholesome, and rotten. Paul is saying don’t talk this way (with corrupt words), but this way (with words that bring benefit, grace).  Here are three translations of Ephesians 4:29:

Honoring God in Cyberspace

Three years ago I did a series of posts about facebook and social networking. Because things have changed rapidly in cyberspace, I have updated the original posts and offer them again for your thoughts and consideration. Facebook, blogs , online communities, texting, tweeting – these are things that were virtually unknown a decade ago. Today our lives, as well as our children’s lives, are dominated by Internet-enabled communities. The use of language has changed as well. There is a cyber vocabulary that is unique to the electronic world. Letter groups such as lol, ttyl, and np, form a modern shorthand that allows for an almost instant transmission of moods, thoughts and plans across cities, states and continents. People write on electronic […]

Letting the Light Shine

The world in which we live is troubling. As Christians, we must understand where the trouble comes from. It is easy to list many reasons for the wrongs we observe: disease, natural disasters, wars, etc., but the root cause, the real reason for the troubles we have is sin—sin and its impact on creation. Sin brings trouble and discord. Sin has brought trouble to relationships, sickness and inherited diseases to untold millions throughout history—and the list could go on. So whether directly or indirectly, the darkness in the world and in our lives comes from sin.

Thoughts from Black Friday

It was early morning on Black Friday. Though the sun was still below the horizon, millions of people had left the comfort of their homes to purchase gifts to give to friends and family in exactly in one month’s time. Given man’s fallen nature what is it causes us to even think about giving something to someone else?

Staying Over – Sex with Less Commitment

Proverbs 2 says sexual immorality is something that is damaging to people – something that need to be saved from.  For many enlightened people, this is an outdated viewpoint.  More and more Americans believe that they can discard this thinking as easily as they would yesterday’s newspaper.  American young people are becoming increasingly wary of commitment.  According to a new study done by the University of Missouri, the creative solution to handling the stress of commitment is something called stay-overs.  An article entitled Living together – too much commitment for today’s couples, in USA Today about this study explains:

Some thoughts about Harry Potter

Tonight is the premiere of the last installment of the Harry Potter movies.  The movies and the books have been tremendously successful from a sales point of view.  Harry Potter has had the same impact that Star Wars did a generation ago. Without getting into all that could be said about these iconic series, and much could and should be said, allow me to make one observation that is common to both. Both film series represent an eastern view of the world.  Good and evil must be in balance.  At Hogwarts, Gryffindor (good) and Slytherin (not so good) represent both ends of the spectrum. But both are a part of the school and a balanced “Hogwarts” education.  Likewise the goal […]

Bullying: Sean’s Story

Sean is in sixth grade. He does well academically. He is not particularly athletic, but he isn’t clumsy. He likes to read. His parents, who are very conservative, keep close watch on his social life; as a result, he is  not active on the social scene at school. He does go to social events for his age group at church. He is kind of quiet and average in physical size.

Bullying

In the last post we mentioned what the world might be like if there had been no promise of the gospel. But God did give that promise and immediately brought hope to a hopeless situation. As mankind spread throughout the earth from the Garden, as deeply tarnished image-bearers, he never became as bad as he could possibly be. But, apart from those who embraced the redemptive promise given to Adam and Eve, man did become bad—horribly bad. Thus, people made to live in harmony instead lived in strife and tyranny. Unity was replaced with self-centeredness. Among many other terrible sins, bullying was born. Cain, the very first son, killed his brother because he was displeased with him. Later, Moses acts […]

Is Marriage Becoming Obsolete?

Is marriage becoming obsolete? Apparently a growing number of Americans think so. An article in the November 17 edition of USA Today Online states that “among the 2,691 adults surveyed by the Pew Research Center last month, 39% say marriage is becoming obsolete, up from 28% who responded to the same question posed in 1978 by Time magazine, which participated in the survey.”
