Replacing God

America has moved on from the Bible and its views of morality. Three “modern” replacements have been employed to succeed the supposed outdated structure of biblical Christianity. These replacements are: Public Opinion  Public opinion has assumed the role of Scripture and the Holy Spirit.  When politicians use phrases like the will of the people or the American people want they are typically referring to public opinion polls.  Even the terms right and wrong are used subjectively, as in people feel something is right or wrong or this is wrong for America. These terms are seldom used in the absolute sense.  Sexual preference or practice has become a matter to be decided by public opinion and personal choice. Biblical standards are […]

Your borders are secure and safe

There is much concern about the southern border of the United States. Is it secure and safe? Will the border offer protection from disease, drug cartels, terror and economic stress? At the moment these questions are up for debate.   But there are borders set by God for his people that are safe and secure. These borders will protect you from the forces of evil.  There is no force of man or of this world which can break through them.    The security offered by God’s borders for your life will bring comfort to you as you consider the challenges that arise from the uncertainty of national borders.  Many Christians live in countries where man-made borders offer little or no […]

Thought for the Lord’s Day

The wicked will not win.   The headlines tell the story of a godless culture. World events are troubling. The situation with our southern border seems out of control. The political climate is anything but stable. These things may shake our confidence.   But, this is only what my eye can see. Praise God there is another set of eyes that sees more than my limited vision. While wickedness appears to be firmly entrenched, the rule of God is never threatened. His goodness knows no end. The time of evil has limits set by the Lord of Lords.    The King has triumphed at the cross. The rule of God is secure.  He raises up the mighty of this world […]

Is America Independent from God?

On July 4th, two hundred thirty-eight years ago, Americans declared their independence from England and her King. Unfortunately, such matters are seldom settled by simply signing a piece of paper. England was not pleased with this declaration and went to war. But in the end, America had her desire—she was independent of the English. But in what sense are people and countries ever independent? It is an enticing idea that a person or a country can independently forge their own destiny,  write their own history. However, this idea is just as deadly as it is enticing. Reality is this: no country is free from the rule of the Great Sovereign of the Universe. Each person owes his next breath, and […]

That was close!

God  provides many opportunities to speak of Christ.  For example, when someone says, “thank God, that was close!” Take this opportunity to talk about what really happened. Perhaps something like this: “Hey Paul, that really was a close call.” “Yep, the man upstairs was looking after me.” “You really think so?” “Absolutely, how else do you think I got out of that mess!?!” “Paul, I think you are exactly right.” “Of course I am, that was too close for comfort!” “Paul, you and I have been friends for years, right?”  “Of course, you have seen me dodge the bullet many times.” “Well, as your friend let me ask you a question. You just said God bailed you out. Why wouldn’t […]

Thought for the Lord’s Day

What is safety?   The answer depends upon how you define safe. If safety means protection from the evil and devastation of this world, then the answer is no, you are not safe. If safety means you are always in God’s care and that whatever the circumstance, he is working all things together for his glory and your good, then yes, you are safe.    This world is not our home. The ugliness of sin and death mark this world. The enemy wishes to distract us from these realities by fleeting, temporal pleasures. The reality is that we live in a world at war. Sometimes, we are reminded of this war by our own war with sin or the sins […]

God has better answers

“I missed the future. Obviously I knew even before his recurrence that I’d never grow old with Augustus Waters. But thinking about Lidewjj and her boyfriend, I felt robbed. I would probably never again see the ocean from thirty thousand feet above, so far up that you can’t make out the waves or any boats. so that the ocean is a great and endless monolith. I could imagine it. I could remember it.  But I couldn’t see it again,…” Hazel Grace Lancaster, The Fault in our Stars   Does death rob us of our future?   The answer is no. God in his gracious and loving providence has planned your days down to the millisecond. Your life is filled with […]

What is Joy?

Joy has to do with the reality of God.   Joy transcends the moment and extends into eternity.   Joy does not fade but endures.   In our deepest sadness we are rescued by joy.   Joy alone makes sense of the pain of life.   Joy is the certain knowledge that what is unseen is more vast than what is seen.   Joy is the fuel of hope.   Joy means your circumstances are opportunities to honor your God.   Joy is the evidence that you are never truly lost.   Joy means you are not limited by a sin-cursed world.   Joy means that you can love when you are hurt.   Joy means that you can live […]

The Fault in our Souls

A review of The Fault in our Stars. John Green’s book, The Fault in Our Stars, is not to be taken lightly. Over 10 million copies of the book have been sold to date. It is currently ranked the number one best seller on Amazon and has been followed by a recent blockbuster movie. The book’s target audience is young adults and teenagers; the theme of the book is about two terminal cancer patients who are teenagers—not exactly what one would expect to be a winning formula. Green is a talented writer. The story is written in the voice of Hazel, a 16-year-old girl diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her life is transformed when she meets Gus, a 17-year-old boy who […]

Reality Check

Being content is being connected to reality. Discontent comes when you believe things are out control.  Nothing ever gets by God. He is never stressed. His ability to care for you is never in doubt. There is no circumstance in your life that prevents you from honoring God.  So the constant in your life is in finding what will honor God. In response to this people sometimes say, well, I’m only human. But, then you must also say God is only God. He can’t be like you, he can’t mess up.  So Paul tells Timothy to be content with following God. This must always be your reality check – bringing honor to God. “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for […]
