Contentment

Contentment is being satisfied because God is working everything together for my good and for his glory.  Prayer for contentment: Father, you give me everything that I need, and you have given me what I need most – forgiveness for my sin. Please help me to be content. Sometimes I struggle with being angry and feeling sorry for myself when I don’t get what I want. Please help me to be satisfied with your love and to rest in your perfect care. In Jesus name, Amen. Ruth Younts – from Get Wisdom! Parents this is a definition and a prayer that must be woven into your life before you can bring this truth to your children. No, none of us […]

Justice – it is not about you

It is dangerous to want justice for ourselves. When it comes to justice, we have nothing to bargain with. We are guilty before the holy God of heaven and earth. Only Jesus, by his substitutionary death for his people, can provide justice for us. Justice is something we cannot demand. Indeed a quest for personal justice for ourselves will lead to our destruction. This is a vital truth your children must embrace.   In, “Get Wisdom!”, Ruth Younts defines and describes wisdom this way:    “Justice is measuring everything by God’s law, to know and do what is right.”   The balance scale measures what is in one pan against the weight in the other pan. So, too, we should […]

Courage

Courage is doing what must be done, even when I am afraid and I think it is too hard. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 Prayer for Courage God, please help me to have courage. It is very hard to do what’s right when people might make fun of me or be angry at me. It’s also hard when I’m afraid I’ll fail. Thank you for Jesus, who had the courage to die on the cross for me. Help me to care about pleasing you more than anything else. In Jesus’ name, Amen. This prayer has rich application for our […]

Shamefully, I often care more about fairness than mercy

Asking God to treat you fairly is an invitation to disaster. If God were a God of fairness, we would experience a horrible life and spend eternity in hell. Fairness has to do with justice. Fairness implies that there is something good in me; somehow my good deeds will balance out my bad deeds. Fairness works if you and I are the only ones who matter. But we are not. God matters. If I was fully aware of the awfulness of my sin I would spend every minute of my life pleading for mercy, but I often care more about fairness than mercy. That is tragic. My most recent post is excerpted from the portion of Get Wisdom! that deals […]

Mercy

Mercy is showing kindness to those who are weak, sinful, and needy, because Christ loved me first when I was his enemy. Prayer to be merciful: Father, thank you for being merciful to me all the time, when I never deserve it.  I want to be merciful too, but I often care more about fairness than mercy. Help me to be quick to forgive or overlook an offense. Help me to have compassion for those in need. In Jesus name, Amen. From Get Wisdom! by Ruth Younts

Faithfulness

Faithfulness is being dependable, so that others can trust what I say and do. The rainbow is the sign of God’s covenant with all living creatures that promises he will never again destroy all life with a flood (Genesis 9:12). Just as God is always faithful to his word, so you should be faithful in all you say and do. Prayer for faithfulness: Dear God, it is hard to be faithful all the time. I just can’t do it. Even when I’m trying, I fail a lot. Please help me to be more trustworthy and dependable. Thank you that Jesus was completely faithful for me. In Jesus Name, Amen Let love and faithfulness never leave you;     bind them around your […]

The Gospel and Self-control

Self-control is not about changing behavior. Self-control is the good yield of the Holy Spirit’s work producing his fruit. Self-control is the ability to say no to my wrong desires and yes to what God wants me to do. Prayer for Self-Control: Father, please help me to say no to sin and yes to obedience and pleasing you. I really want to do whatever you want me to do, but it’s too hard by myself. I need your help all the time to say “yes” to you. Please help me. In Jesus’ name, Amen. from Get Wisdom! by Ruth Younts Notice that biblically, self-control is not a behavior issue, as in “get control of yourself.” Rather, it is an issue […]

Prayer for Repentance

God, thank you for making repentance possible by sending Jesus to live and die in my place. Thank you that my sin doesn’t separate me from your love. But still, sometimes it is hard to repent, especially when I am stubborn and angry and I just want my own way. Please give me a repentant heart and help me to love you more. In Jesus name, Amen.   Ruth Younts in Get Wisdom!   Beautiful prayer for children. I find that it fits my own heart more than I would like to admit. The prayer strips away my clever defenses for my sin. Something to be said for child-like faith!

Self-control

Self-control is the ability to say no to my wrong desires and yes to what God wants me to do.   Encourage your child to pray this prayer for self-control:   Father, please help me to say no to sin and yes to obedience and pleasing you. I really want to do whatever you want me to do, but it’s too hard by myself. I need your help all the time to say “yes” to you. Please help me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.   Ruth Younts from Get Wisdom!   Jesus taught his disciples how to pray the Lord’s prayer word for word. One way to teach your children to pray is to follow his example and teach them how […]
