A Prayer to Keep Me From What I Want

Posted on June 18th, 2019 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom

Dear Father, please keep me from wanting life to serve my dreams and my wishes. Keep me from trying to fit you into the narrative of my desires, even the ones I think are good! My dreams are too small, my desires are too selfish, my actions are too sinful for me to focus on what I think is best. You know my weaknesses. I pray you would give me the courage to see that my life is about Christ. I need to follow his life and love you as.. read more

Your Will Be Done

Posted on June 5th, 2019 · Posted in Authority, Prayer

When you are sick you want relief. When you are angry you seek justice. When you are hurt you want comfort. For all of these things, we as Christians are told to cry out to God. This is good! But from this point things can get a little uncertain. Should you pray for an immediate response? Has God turned away from you if there does not appear to be one? There is some clear guidance for us in the Lord’s prayer. Christ instructs his disciples to pray: your will be.. read more

Heart Attitudes and Prayer

Posted on May 4th, 2019 · Posted in Parenting, Prayer

Parents, if your desire is to see your children’s hearts become responsive to the gospel, the place to start is with your own heart. Here are 3 core heart-attitudes to cultivate that will help mold your heart to be God’s instrument for presenting Christ to your children.  The first attitude is humility:   Humility is the source of the power that you need to represent Christ well to your children.  Humility means that you trust God and follow him. Pride means that you trust yourself and fail to consistently rely.. read more

Where is God?

Posted on May 1st, 2019 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom, Worldview

There are times when everything goes wrong all at once. The kids are out of control. There are problems with the car, with the house. You are tired to the bone. You try to pray but it is like God is on a coffee break.  Life gets like this sometimes. Jehoshaphat had such a moment. However, instead of wondering where God was he turned to the praise of his God. Praise often is the last thing thought about when life becomes crazy.  We associate praise with good times but not.. read more

A Prayer for Life

Posted on April 12th, 2019 · Posted in Prayer, World View, Worship

Dear Father, My dreams are too small, my desires too selfish, my actions too sinful. My focus and, too often, my prayers are about what I think is best. Father, you know my weak heart and doubting faith. I pray you would give me the courage to see that my life is about Christ. I need to follow his life and love you as he did on earth. I pray my life would be about adding to your reputation. I pray my focus would be consumed by showing gratitude for.. read more

A two sentence prayer to guard your heart in 2019

Posted on January 9th, 2019 · Posted in Parenting, Prayer

The Holy Spirit wants you, commands you to center your thoughts and actions on putting God first in your life. Specifically how does he want you to implement his calling to put God first? He instructed Solomon to urge you to guard your heart, because it is the source of your life. Then he directs Paul to tell you to be in constant prayer and that everything you do should bring honor to God.   Few would argue that you should put God first, but how do you practically make.. read more

It’s Too Busy In My Life!

Posted on November 30th, 2018 · Posted in Holidays, Prayer, Sanctification

A prayer for the busy Christmas season. Dear Father, it’s busy in my life. Crowds are everywhere. My heart is busy, too many gifts, not enough money, not enough time. This time is supposed to be about Jesus. But even at church I feel more busy than thankful for his birth. There are people to see, events to attend. All of this is supposed to be about Jesus, but it feels more and more like it’s all about me. Jesus came to bring peace, but my life is full of.. read more

A prayer

Posted on April 11th, 2018 · Posted in Prayer, Worship

My Father, my Savior, This night brings no certainty about tomorrow. I know what I want to happen, but then I think of all that could happen. I want to be healed, but then there are so many that need healing. There are so many that hurt. I want my family to be cared for by you. But there are so many more that need care. I think about tomorrow and I feel so inadequate, so incapable of knowing how to pray to you, even though you are the one.. read more

Psalm 121 and your fears

Posted on November 1st, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom

Casting a glance at the mountains raises the question, “What is waiting for me up ahead?” The long, dark shadows of your fears are cast before you. They are like the shadows of the mountains against a dense fog. What is hiding in those shadows? How will you find the help and courage you need to go on and find safety? The hills around you may hide struggles and terrors of all kinds. Where will you find the help you need to keep going? Then your heart remembers that your.. read more

A prayer for troubled times

Posted on October 4th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, World View

Dear Father, we need your help this day. Our world is a mess. But you are holy and worthy of our praise.  We ask that your kingdom will come with power to our family, our lives, our country and our world. There are many things that trouble us. There are threats of war, disease, and unrest. There are acts of terror in our own cities. We pray that your will be in charge where we are just as you are in heaven. We ask for your peace to rule our.. read more

Mercy for the broken

Posted on October 2nd, 2017 · Posted in Current Events, Prayer, Toddlers

Morning brought heavy hearts in America this Monday. At least 50 are dead and hundreds are wounded in Las Vegas and the numbers are still climbing. One man planned to destroy as many human lives as possible. As a country we are overwhelmed with grief, with anger, with sadness. And, once again the haunting question returns: Why? It will take days and weeks for the authorities to begin to give the immediate answers. But ultimately these reasons will not satisfy or heal the vulnerability of our hearts. Just knowing that.. read more

Ruth’s Letter

Posted on July 31st, 2017 · Posted in Godward Orientation, Prayer

Today I am reposting the letter my wife, Ruth, wrote to our church about her response to what was most important to her once she was diagnosed with brain cancer. My prayer continues to be that I would embrace these priorities as my own. I pray that for you as well. Here is the letter written April 25, 2010: “Twenty-five days ago, on the first day of April, God got my attention with a malignant brain tumor. It’s been quite a month, and now I’m on my way to surgery,.. read more

Trust in the face of fear

Posted on July 6th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom

The world is a scary place. You don’t know when or where the next terrorist attack will happen. You cannot will your children to safety. You cannot wish cancer away. You cannot remove the drunk driver from the road. You cannot force world leaders to be wise and responsible. You cannot stop dangers on the playground or even in your backyard. You cannot stop the hurricane or earthquake. In short, you cannot eliminate the things that bring fear in this life. If this is true, how can you know peace?.. read more

A prayer to love Christ more

Posted on April 21st, 2017 · Posted in Prayer

Father, grant me the courage to love you for who you are and not for whom I want you to be. Grant me the peace to honor you for what you do and not for what I want you to do. Grant me the power to live for what adds to your reputation and not to my own. Grant me the compassion to long for people to know you. Grant me the humility to speak well of you and not of myself. Grant me the discernment build your kingdom and.. read more

Gentleness: a gift to your family

Posted on February 8th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, Sanctification

Do you want your children to see you as someone they can trust? Do you want your spouse to take comfort in just being with you? Are you easy to talk to? Is your family hesitant to talk to you when they are hurting? If someone in your family messes up or is in trouble are you the person that helps him feel secure and safe, the person that she knows will help make things right? You want to be able to answer yes to these questions. In fact, you.. read more
