A prayer for troubled times

Posted on October 4th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, World View

Dear Father, we need your help this day. Our world is a mess. But you are holy and worthy of our praise.  We ask that your kingdom will come with power to our family, our lives, our country and our world. There are many things that trouble us. There are threats of war, disease, and unrest. There are acts of terror in our own cities. We pray that your will be in charge where we are just as you are in heaven. We ask for your peace to rule our.. read more

Mercy for the broken

Posted on October 2nd, 2017 · Posted in Current Events, Prayer, Toddlers

Morning brought heavy hearts in America this Monday. At least 50 are dead and hundreds are wounded in Las Vegas and the numbers are still climbing. One man planned to destroy as many human lives as possible. As a country we are overwhelmed with grief, with anger, with sadness. And, once again the haunting question returns: Why? It will take days and weeks for the authorities to begin to give the immediate answers. But ultimately these reasons will not satisfy or heal the vulnerability of our hearts. Just knowing that.. read more

Ruth’s Letter

Posted on July 31st, 2017 · Posted in Godward Orientation, Prayer

Today I am reposting the letter my wife, Ruth, wrote to our church about her response to what was most important to her once she was diagnosed with brain cancer. My prayer continues to be that I would embrace these priorities as my own. I pray that for you as well. Here is the letter written April 25, 2010: “Twenty-five days ago, on the first day of April, God got my attention with a malignant brain tumor. It’s been quite a month, and now I’m on my way to surgery,.. read more

Trust in the face of fear

Posted on July 6th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom

The world is a scary place. You don’t know when or where the next terrorist attack will happen. You cannot will your children to safety. You cannot wish cancer away. You cannot remove the drunk driver from the road. You cannot force world leaders to be wise and responsible. You cannot stop dangers on the playground or even in your backyard. You cannot stop the hurricane or earthquake. In short, you cannot eliminate the things that bring fear in this life. If this is true, how can you know peace?.. read more

A prayer to live for God

Posted on June 20th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer

Dear Father, please keep me from wanting my life to about me. My dreams are too small, my desires are too selfish, my actions are too sinful for me to focus on what I think is best. Father, you know I can be down and discouraged. You know my weaknesses. I pray you would give me the courage to see that my life is about Christ. I need to follow his life and love you as he did on earth. I pray my life would be about adding to your.. read more

Repost: A Daily Prayer for Troubled Times

Posted on June 5th, 2017 · Posted in Parenting, Prayer

Here is a prayer to pray with your family as you begin the day. It is modeled on the prayer Jesus taught to his disciples. Dear Father, we need your help this day. Our world is a mess. But you are holy and worthy of our praise.  We ask that your kingdom will come with power to our family, our lives, our country and our world.  There are many things that trouble us. There are threats of war, disease, terrorism and unrest. We pray that your will be in charge.. read more

A prayer to love Christ more

Posted on April 21st, 2017 · Posted in Prayer

Father, grant me the courage to love you for who you are and not for whom I want you to be. Grant me the peace to honor you for what you do and not for what I want you to do. Grant me the power to live for what adds to your reputation and not to my own. Grant me the compassion to long for people to know you. Grant me the humility to speak well of you and not of myself. Grant me the discernment build your kingdom and.. read more

Gentleness: a gift to your family

Posted on February 8th, 2017 · Posted in Prayer, Sanctification

Do you want your children to see you as someone they can trust? Do you want your spouse to take comfort in just being with you? Are you easy to talk to? Is your family hesitant to talk to you when they are hurting? If someone in your family messes up or is in trouble are you the person that helps him feel secure and safe, the person that she knows will help make things right? You want to be able to answer yes to these questions. In fact, you.. read more

A prayer for December busyness

Posted on December 15th, 2016 · Posted in Holidays, Prayer

Dear Father, it’s busy in my life. Crowds are everywhere. My heart is busy, too many gifts, not enough money, not enough time. This month is supposed to be about you. But even at church I feel more busy than thankful for Christ. There are people to see, events to attend. All of this is supposed to be about Jesus, but it feels more like it’s all about me. It’s busy in my life. I ask you to fill my heart with the wonder of your mercy. I ask for.. read more

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Posted on November 23rd, 2016 · Posted in Gospel, Gratitude, Prayer

O Lord my God, my Savior, I pray for a heart overflowing with thanksgiving. Father, you are my constant reason for joy. You are faithful when I am unfaithful. You promise heaven when I am consumed by the next hour. Protect me from my own selfish desires. I confess that I want what cannot satisfy. I confess that I complain about what is not done rather than be grateful for what I can do. I confess that I am easily disappointed by those I love, even though you continue to.. read more

Pleasant words and Christ

Posted on November 15th, 2016 · Posted in Communication, Gospel, Prayer

Somehow the idea of pleasant words combined with discipline or instruction seems a little strange. Most memories of being corrected don’t evoke happy or pleasant thoughts. Often correction means stern or harsh warnings, even when given with the best of intentions. However, in the Proverbs instruction is to be received as precious jewelry, something to be worn with honor. How does this happen? Proverbs 16:20-24 provides a guide for how to make your instruction valuable. Solomon stresses the obvious, but neglected value of instruction. Those who pay attention to.. read more

A prayer for November 9th

Posted on November 8th, 2016 · Posted in Current Events, Prayer

The 24/7 news cycle has become a constant noise machine that every hour on the hour proclaims the world is a mess. The reporting on the election continues this theme. One thing you won’t hear is that God can be trusted and the real solutions to the nation’s problems are not political in nature. You won’t hear the expert analysts say what is really needed is that the country must turn to God in repentance and faith. But that’s okay. You don’t need cable news anchors to tell you who.. read more

Asking for help

Posted on July 18th, 2016 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom

Most of us are not very good at asking for help. Asking in a way that humbly acknowledges your need, that shows respect and appreciation for God and others and does so in a way that is not selfish is a life skill that will benefit you and your children. In 2 Chronicles King Asa provides an excellent example of how to ask for help. Asa is faced with doing battle against an army that is significantly larger than the army of Judah. He needs help: Then Asa called to.. read more

Praying for more

Posted on July 13th, 2016 · Posted in Prayer

It is easy to pray for good things. You want our loved ones to be healthy and safe. You want the unrest and violence in our country to end. You want your children to follow God. You want those suffering with sickness to be healed. You want joy to be restored in your marriage. These are good things. But do you have the courage to pray for something more? You sell God short when you only ask for things that seem to good to you.  In the prayer of our.. read more

When the pain seems too much

Posted on June 7th, 2016 · Posted in Prayer, Wisdom

When you are sick you want relief. When you are angry you seek justice. When you are hurt you want comfort. For all of these things, we as Christians are told to cry out to God. This is good! But from this point things can get a little uncertain. Should you pray for an immediate response? Has God turned away from you if he does not appear to answer right away? There is some clear guidance for us in the Lord’s prayer. Christ instructs his disciples to pray: “your will.. read more

A President’s Prayer

Posted on June 6th, 2016 · Posted in Prayer, Worldview

Franklin Roosevelt’s D-Day Prayer June 6, 1944 My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our.. read more

Teach your children to pray for what is best

Posted on March 18th, 2016 · Posted in Prayer, Shaping Influences, Wisdom

In the Lord’s prayer Jesus tells you to pray for God’s will to be done. By asking God for his kingdom to rule and his will to be done, you are making a life-changing request! You are acknowledging that his purpose and plan is better than your own. God’s way is better than your way! It does not work to say or think, “Please do your will and mine.” This is a foolish statement. Are your desires as important as God’s? It is God’s kingdom and will that must desired.. read more
