Parents, Where Do You Look for Help?

There is the correct answer, of course, but what I am looking for is the actual answer.  When you are discouraged what do you long for? Is it a change in your kids or spouse. Perhaps you long for circumstances to change. Maybe you even look to yourself to change in some elusive way. These sources of help will fall short of finding lasting strength.   When the Children of Israel would return to Jerusalem for appointed worship and feast days they would sing songs as they traveled. Jerusalem was high above them as the walked to the city. They looked to the hills, for the City of God was there.   This day look to God for your help. […]

When God Takes Your Pet

Parents, if you are going to talk about God’s control it is vital that you encourage your children to trust God’s goodness when difficult things happen. For children and their parents losing a pet can be a shattering time. It is also an opportunity to trust God when life really, really hurts.   The Bible beautifully explains the closeness we can have with our pets. Nathan describes this closeness in a way that touches our hearts:   “…but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up, living with him and his children. It shared his meager food and drank from his cup; it slept in his arms, […]

Authority is Established Through Righteousness, Not Manipulation

Manipulation cares primarily for performance. Biblical instruction focuses primarily on the heart.   Kings detest wrongdoing,     for a throne is established through righteousness. Proverbs 16:12   Authority is established by God, not by my persuasive words.    If I seek God’s righteousness, there is no room for my pragmatic schemes.   If my leadership is established by God’s righteousness, it is foolish to have authority serve my convenient desires.   Do i seek first the Kingdom of Heaven and his righteousness or do I vainly seek the establishment of my own little kingdom.   […]

Thought for the Lord’s Day

Wisdom and Worship It is impossible to separate the acceptable worship of God from a deep love of the wisdom of God. Biblical wisdom is more precious than anything, anything that you can desire. If you do not desire God’s wisdom above all else, your worship will be an exercise in self-service. Failure to love wisdom, is a failure to love God.   Blessed are those who find wisdom,    those who gain understanding,14 for she is more profitable than silver    and yields better returns than gold.15 She is more precious than rubies;    nothing you desire can compare with her.
