Life’s storms are not random events!

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7 that regardless of whether one is rich or poor, wise or unwise, prepared or unprepared, young or old, the storms will come. Still, when they do come we are often surprised. “Why is this happening?”

Comfort comes when you and your children grasp that the storms are not random. Life’s storms move at the command of Jesus Christ. He is the only source of protection and safety. With Christ your view, your emotional response to life’s storms can be one of hope, confidence, and comfort in God’s care. Even in the midst of hurt, God’s peace can prevail.

We forget that we live in a sin-cursed world. We are told we can be safe. We believe we can protect ourselves. We believe that we are entitled to safety and peace.  We believe that the purpose of human relationships is to make us happy and fulfilled.

The truth is all assurances of safety on earth ended at the fall.

Don’t misunderstand, we should be wise and prudent. But, at the same time, we must realize that the storms will come and no amount of human preparation can provide ultimate protection. There will be times when life seems totally out of control! Don’t hide this great truth from your children. They, too, will experience the fierce storms.

Too often we are like the disciples caught in the storm. We cry out, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” It is good to cry out!!! But our cry must grow to become one of confidence, not panic.

You and I have moments like this. We are convinced we are going to drown in the storms of life. But your God has not abandoned you. He still says, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”

Yes, life often appears to be out of control.  Faith is trusting in what you cannot see and realizing there are things you cannot control. God is always in loving and compassionate control of our lives for his glory and our good. He has promised that he will not let you go, no matter how strong the storm.

Remember, peace is not the absence of storms. Peace is knowing God in the middle of the storm. This is a truth that you teach by your daily instruction, but it is made real to your child by the way respond to these storms. Your relationship with your God is strengthened as you trust his word over your own understanding.
